It Was Only Tea (2008)
A performance at SHUNT Lounge, in vaults beneath London Bridge station. Alongside a photographic exhibition, this work explored performativity in conventional, heteronormative domestic arrangements - and the dreams which girls and young women were sold. A solo performer interacting with a host of symbolic household items, culminating in the donning (and dunking) of a matrimonial dress made of teabags.
This was before tea became a popular vehicle for understanding consent, but it definitely nodded to the unspoken ‘grey areas’ of navigating intimate partnerships at that time, and the expectations and projections placed on women within them.
